FAA Examinations - Which Exam and What to Expect
Your FAA exam with our certified FAA examiner will consist of a physical exam and a series of tests as required by the FAA. The type of exam, class I, II, or III, depends on what you will be doing. The exam and testing will depend on which class you need and your age.
FAA Medical Certificates Classes (I, II, III)
- Distant Vision: 20/20 or better for First and Second class, 20/40 or better for Third class, each eye, with or without correction.
- Near Vision: 20/40 or better for all classes, in each eye, with or without correction.
- Intermediate Vision: 20/40 or better for First and Second class , with or without correction, age 50 and over.
- Color Vision: All classes, ability to perceive colors necessary for safe performance and duties.
- Hearing: Demonstrate hearing of average conversational voice or pass audiometric test.
- Audiology: Audiometric speech discrimination test.
- ENT: No ear disease or condition, vertigo, or disturbance of speech or equilibrium
- Pulse: To determine cardiac system status and responsiveness.
- Blood Pressure: As compared to current guidelines.
- Electrocardiogram: First class only- At age 35 and annually after age 40. Not routinely required for Second and Third Class
- Mental: No Diagnosis of psychosis, bipolar disorder, or severe personality disorder
Airline Transport Pilots
- 40 years of age Remainder of month issued plus 12 months.
- 40 years of age or older Remainder of month issued plus 6 months.
Commercial Pilot, Flight Engineer, Flight Navigator, Balloon Pilots Exercising Commercial Pilot Privileges, Air Traffic Control Tower Operator
- All Ages Remainder of month issued plus 12 months.
Private Pilot, Recreational Pilot, Most Flight Instructors
- Under 40 years of age Remainder of month issued plus 60 months.
- 40 years of age or older Remainder of month issued plus 24 months.
